Highly acclaimed by Gunsmith and Author, John Bivins, in the March/April 1977 RIFLE. Contains no mercury salts, and is non-toxic. Cuts through grease and oils, making pre-cleaning much less critical. Beautiful results!(17.2.2014)
Have tried several rust blue products - this is by far the best. Follow the expanded directions on the LMF web site and you will see outstanding results. I do not touch the polished parts after final cleaning and prior to the first processing cycle, however after that I do not worry about oils from my skin. I restore Smith revolvers. The finish this product makes is not a color/texture match to factory hot dip - it is actually better! Smith factory blue actually looks tacky next to the rich luster from LMF. BTW...do yourself a favor and buy the correct carding brushes from Brownells. Finally, remember- your final result will only be as good as your polishing job!
Anderson Services Gunsmith Prefered!(11.1.2010)
Works as described, not sure I would change from my current product but only because I am used to using what I have.
Good for classic S/S(17.1.2011)
The gold standard for reblacking classic s/s shotguns. You'll need a carding wheel and boil tank or steam source to complete. Easy to use and forgiving. Great product for touch up too. Works great on reblacking damascus barrels too but you'll need to wash in Ferric Chloride to remove the black from the hard steels and leave it on the soft steels.
Fantastic Product(15.1.2012)
This is an amazing and easy to use product. THe results were a deep, rich brown that is both durable and attractive. The process is time consuming, taking me about 4 or 5 days. It supposedly can be done in 24 hours but I need sleep! During the process I was scared as the finish often looked streaky, patchy, reddish et cetera; but I pressed on and trusted the instructions and the online reviews. The result? A finish I am proud of, far superior to my previous experience with cold blues. Do not hesitate to try this product, it really does live up to the hype.
First Time Success!(12.2.2013)
I blued an octagon 45-70 barrel for a Rolling Block project of mine. At first I tried to follow the instructions and do the boiling/carding every 3 hours or so. I got very splotchy results and was thinking of removing the blue, re-polishing and starting over.
The next weekend I decided to give it one last try and also decided to let it rust for longer. I tried 6 hours and had a nice even coat of rust that I never saw using the 3 hour intervals. The results were ASTOUNDING. The splotchiness cleared up, the blue turned a lovely deep blue and I think this product is marvelous.
I never wore gloves during this project and it apparently made no difference. I truly think the results speak for themselves. All my friends admire the bluing job.
Good Stuff(27.1.2014)
I am using this to blue my 1911 which was previously parkerized. Bluing isn't as durable, but it looks nicer and I was starting to get holster wear anyway. This product works very well to give you a nice even coat of rust. If it doesn't work for you, then you have to adjust conditions such as humidity and heat. When I tried leaving the parts sitting out in the open at room temperature it didn't do much at all, so I put it in a container in the oven with a damp wash cloth on low heat with very good results. It also work if you want a vintage brown finish which I am currently using for a black powder pistol.
Great Product. Follow the directions.(14.9.2015)
Used this on a Series 70 Government Model. Was a little nervous at first but if you follow the directions you'll do well. Just keep going.
Wear gloves during application!!!! You will leave fingerprints otherwise. If you leave prints you'll have to sand back down to the polish you started with. But it can be done.
Two browning applications to start followed by three to four applications with boiling water per the instructions. Used the Brownell's carding wheel and it worked great. Buy it too.
Finish turned out great but I would have polished the flats to a finer grade (600 to 800) to get a little more shine. Resulted in a nice, dark blue color.
So, wear gloves and follow the directions and you'll do fine.
Not the results I was hoping for(15.4.2016)
Have been trying without success to rust blue a few parts. Not sure what it's doing, but not rusting like it should. Tried once with failure and thought I had possibly messed up on the first run. Stripped everything again degreased and tried a second time. Dismal rusting.... Tried applying a second coat without a boil this time in desperation and it turned the thing black! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I'm thinking that possibly a bum batch.
